Designer Spotlight with Lemlem

Supermodel, actress and philanthropist Liya Kebede brought hope to her fellow Ethiopian natives with her Lemlem label. Meaning “to flourish or bloom” in Amharic, Lemlem returns the demand for  weaving back to the people of the small African country and merges tradition and modernity to create beautifully handcrafted women’s and children’s clothing. Liya “recognized the beauty, quality and historic significance of the weavers’ work and started Lemlem in 2007 as a way to inspire economic independence in her native country and to preserve the art of weaving.”

This sustainable fashion line is not only one you’ll want to wear because you like the cause; the bright colors, crisp lines and flowy designs would be appealing in the first place. Lemlem does the sometimes impossible job of successfully combining fashion and charity to create a product both the bleeding heart and fashionista can fall in love with. Take a look at the behind the scenes video of Lemlem’s first lookbook shoot and get ready to go gaga for these spot on woven creations.
Australia has two Lemlem distributors: Robby Ingham in Paddington  Grace Melbourne in Toorak VIC, or shop online here.
